That Katie Couric… She’s a bulldog:
When does the era of dumb end?
If you’ll pardon the sports analogies…
You know, much like some pundits were quipping when Palin was announced, this is indeed turning out to be almost literally McCain’s Hail Mary. It was fourth and one, no time left on the clock and his campaign was just at its limit for a field goal (It seemed the DNC put up a good show and scored late in the game). For McCain, a field goal ties the game; extends it to overtime. That would have been a more rational, measured, safe choice in the effort to win the game. Go with Ridge, Lieberman, or a qualified, experienced conservative minority, be it a woman, or a person of color. But instead, it was the game changer! The go-for-it, win-it-all-now, fake field goal Hail Mary! The play that simultaneously elicits OMG and WTF. It’s the maverick way.
And now as we’re following the trajectory, at the launch there was that moment of Oh Holy Shit it just might work! Then as the ball comes back down to the field of play you realize just how dumb that play really was as you see six defensive backs surrounding the one receiver. Not only that, the ball was thrown short. Technically still a possibility, but it’d take a miracle.
And when it’s all said and done. There will be lots of “what were you thinking” going on. And in McCain’s case, he wasn’t. Especially if you were supposedly putting country first.
Jason, I think you have given a fantastic analogy as to what is going on in this election year… unfortunately sometimes the hail mary gets tipped and then caught by the offensive team for a miraculous reception and this is what always scares me when the quaterback launches the ball in the air, the outcome is not guaranteed until the final whistle is blown (barring an instant replay, referee in the booth call, which is not what anyone wants, thank you Florida).
